Eating well, Healthy and Sustainably!

As a self-proclaimed foodie, I strive to eat good food, but does that mean I have to compromise on certain ethical beliefs about where the food comes from and how it is caught, especially fish? Chris and I are both biologists, focused on the ecological impacts that industry or people have on freshwater systems. As a result, we are well aware of all the research supporting sustainable fisheries and how shifting to such practices is a win-win situation for the health of our oceans, the socio-economic standing of local fishing communities, and overall human health. We are however, always questioning the ever-changing state of certain fisheries and are continually asking ourselves how best to implement smarter choices in everyday life. If we have problems making these decisions, we are surely not alone!

Fish, pulled chicken (or any slow cooked meat) and veggie tacos are delicious, reasonably healthy and get everyone making their own to taste. Paired with margaritas and some funky beats, you won’t feel the cold winter chill… mind, you might not feel much of anything after a margarita or two!

*Test your Knowledge and Win a Foodie Collective Book*

On February 13th, six of the Foodie Collective’s best and brightest joined forces to test their knowledge at Santropol Roulant’s 4th Trivia Night. Held at Santropol headquarters, participants were asked to contribute 10$ each (60$ per team of six) with all profits going to the Roulant. Beer and wine were available and large bowls of Chex mix abounded on each teams’ table. It was a great turnout, with more than eight teams in total. You could feel the brain cells buzzing!

Christmas season tidings!

For the Foodie Collective’s last throwdown of the year, it was only apt to celebrate our traditional side and set the theme to Christmas favourites. My recipe did not originate in my kitchen; rather it has morphed from my having to shop at IKEA for holiday gifts and attending various holiday cocktail parties. Let me explain the former… I am not fond of shopping amongst the mad crowds of people trying to buy last minute gifts or home decorations, but I find myself invariably roaming the lanes of one of these stores. The only consolation is food! IKEA has a brilliant marketing strategy in that they sell their addictive and delicious Swedish meatballs midway through shopping. So each year, I have my prize of comfort food in return for good behaviour.

Maman’s Cold Busting Chicken Soup

Ginger and garlic are the star ingredients, but the chicken broth and greens give the soup the warm and cozy feeling. Couple with a slice of crusty bread or tomato crositini and enjoy this soup’s healing effect!

Apple Cake with Whisky Flavoured Whipped Cream

Apples are the quintessential fall food! Savoury or sweet, they give any dish a rustic comfort food like quality. Like all my ‘throwdown’ dishes, I take inspiration from the local farmers’ markets, which for this occasion, highlight the many apple varieties grown in the Montreal surrounding areas. From the sweet and pulpy Gala to the tart and crisp Spartan and Macintosh varieties, any dish is bound to reflect the sweet subtleties derived from any of apple varieties used.

The Foodie Collective Book

Hello wonderful readers!

It’s that time of the year again to pull out pen and paper and begin drafting your Christmas list.
I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely a huge fan of Christmas. I understand it can be a holiday wrought with anxiety and indecision – many may not even enjoy it at all. If you’re looking to avoid long lineups at the cash register, I have the perfect solution for you: donate to charity! But don’t just give money – which is nice, but kind of impersonal – instead, buy our book for yourself or as a gift! You heard right; if you were wondering why The Foodie Collective has been less active on this blog (tisk tisk), it’s because they have been working on an incredible project: a recipe book that combines all of The Foodie Collective’s favorite tried and tested recipes, along with fun food-related articles, photography and artwork. The best news of all is that this book was created and published by The Foodie Collective, with the help of incredible contributors, for the purpose of donating all the proceeds to an amazing local organization Santropol Roulant.

The Foodie Collective came up with the idea for this book during a Christmas oyster party. As we were discussing the success of our very first fundraiser – we raised $485 for Mission Bon Accueil in 2011 – as well as how fortunate we are to eat so well so often, we decided a self-published, all-proceeds-donated to-charity cookbook would be the best way to give back. As such, this year, we have partnered with Santropol Roulant as our charity of choice.

  

“Since 1995, Santropol Roulant has been using food to create community. We are a social service with a vision of social change. The heart of our organization is our Meals-on-Wheels Program that, with the help of thousands of volunteers, provides over 20,000 freshly cooked, nutritious and tasty meals a year to clients living with a loss of autonomy. This only scratches the surface though. Like you, we love food and think it has great power. The fact is, every time we eat food, cook it, plant it, grow it or compost it, our world changes. Our deepest thanks to the Foodie Collective for creating this beautiful book that will help put food on the tables of so many.”

In purchasing this book, you know you’re doing a good thing. Plus, you get to discover our favorite eclectic and imaginative recipes, inspired by both tradition and experimentation, along with important local food initiatives, several food-related articles, and custom artwork by Montreal’s finest.

Hundreds of hours have been donated during the creation of this book, from the graphic designer (wonderful Sasha Endoh), to the writers, illustrators, photographers and Throwdowners, of course. As such, it would be greatly appreciated if you could support our cause by buying one or two or three books this Christmas. In so doing, you’ll be making sure more people have access to daily, nutritious meals.
