Let Them Eat Cake … or Pudding

Have you noticed that from February to April there are a lot of birthdays going on? In my case, I have 8 birthdays (including mine) spread out over 5 weeks. Last week, there were three birthdays at my office and this week another two. That’s a lot of cake and celebrating. This week is both my mother’s and my sister’s birthdays (Happy Birthday you guys) and I wanted to make my sister a birthday cake. She loves cheesecake, so I wanted to make a Brownie Bottom Cheese Cake.

The Food Diaries: New York City

This past weekend, I took myself on a little getaway to New York City. I needed to escape the blistering cold streets of Montreal and enter the beautiful, garbage smelling, architecturally stimulating, food mecca that is The Big Apple. The first reason for my trip was to spend time with my sister for her birthday. However, the weekend quickly became a food extravaganza. We ate delicious snacks as we walked around the city, such as brioches sucrées at Ladurée, the Blue Ribbon sandwich at Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken, avocado toast at Café Gitane and pork buns at Momofuku. Come Sunday night, Emily and I laid on the couch in an intense food coma and ended up snacking on hummus and pita. Can you say food overload?!

Gnocchi Workshop at Santropol Roulant

This past December, The Foodie Collective was invited to give a second workshop at Santropol Roulant. This time on the menu: gnocchi. These are not your average potato gnocchi though; actually, there are no potatoes at all. These little pillows of ricotta are elegant and very easy to make. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Santropol for involving us in their community. Planning an Oyster Friendly Menu

Sweet and Salty Pancakes with Candied Bacon Whipped Cream and Whiskey Syrup

I definitely did not lack inspiration for the Diner Throwdown. I hesitated until the very last minute on what dish to make, finally deciding on sweet and salty pancakes over runner-up ideas like meatloaf, burgers, mac’n cheese, grand slam breakfast, grilled cheese, etc… As you can probably tell from that list, I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. So my newfound pancake obsession was quite a surprise! I wanted to make them as light and salty as possible, which is why I opted to use cake flour (which is already pre-loaded with baking powder and salt) and salted butter in the pancake batter.

Festival Mondial de la Bière 2013

Every year, the event that I look forward to most is Beerfest aka Le festival mondial de la bière. What started as an excuse to hangout at Windsor Station and drink the entire day, has turned into an annual tradition. However, there is a strategy in order to fully appreciate the experience: arrive early and go during a weekday. This will ensure that you actually get a chance to sample new beers without competing with the crowds and drunkards. To quote my friend Nerio’s shirt that he wore this year “You can’t drink all day unless you start in the morning.” Wise words. I would like to point out that I am in no way a beer expert, but I’ve tried many different varieties throughout the years and have taken a stab at making my own brews.

The best part of loving food is sharing it. That is why The Foodie Collective jumped on the opportunity to give cooking classes at our favorite food organization Santropol Roulant. On May 30th, Throwdowners Katherine Macnaughton and Amanda Piedimonte will host a fresh pasta carbonara cooking class.
